For what its worth, we just bought a SelectComfort mattress. It will be coming soon and I will let people know if we like it.
In our 20 years of marriage, my wife and I have gone through 3 mattress sets.
The first was a queen size that we had to replace due to our cocker spaniel. There just wasn't enough room with the 3 of us in bed.
The second was a King size Serta that we bought when I worked at a major retail store. It listed for over 2k, more than 15 yrs ago. (We didn't pay near that much due to disccounts, etc.) It lasted about 8 -10 years. The box springs were replaced about half way through as they broke.
The third was another King. We got it about 8 years ago at the Original Mattress Factory. It was the second from the top in their product line and we loved it. At least initially. Like the Serta it replaced, it started to form divots/depressions even with turning/flipping the mattress regularly. After 2 or 3 years it was so bad that we called customer service for Original Mattress and they sent someone out to take a look. He had the mattress taken back the factory and had it re-built.
Granted, I am not a small man. (6' ~280#) but, that shouldn't account for ALL of the depression. My wife's side (she is 5'6" and weighs what she should) was also experiencing that sinking feeling.
I have some friends who have the Select Comfort (Sleep Number) bed and have not reported any issues with depressions. So, even though it is over $2K in cost, hopefully it will last a bit longer than 8 years.
Plus, the local Native American Casino contributed to the mattress purchase. <grin>
