I fear uninstalling sp2 may cause more headaches than it is worth - and better to note the exact error message and fix the problem.

I strongly suggest getting sp2 working correctly.

Write down a string of up to 10 words from the error message, including any references to numbers, and plug it into Google with quotes.

You'll no doubt find you're not the only one who's had it... and the solution.

I'm happy to help if you'll send me a screen shot - or the text - of the error message.

Oh. I misunderstood: Thought the error was re some component or something, but sp2 had been installed. Sorry 'bout that.

If you do re-install SP2 make sure you either disable or remove any antivirus program for the duration of the installation. Also close or disable as many resident programs as possible e.g. the small icons at bottom right of taskbar.

So I got to disable the antivirus program?!
I though you get infected during the update without the antivirus

You are unlikley to be infected by SP2 if you get the patch at Microsoft's site. So there shouldn't be a problem with disabling your A/V temporarily.

    nop - it didn't work

    this is what I get

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent
    damage
    to your computer.

If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen,
restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow
    these steps:

Check to be sure you have adequate disk space. If a driver is
identified in the stop message, disable the driver or check
with the manufacturer for driver updates. Try changing video
    adapters.

Check with your hardware vendor for any BIOS updates. Disable
BIOS memory options such as changing or shadowing. If you need
to use Safe Mode to remove or disable components, restart your
computer, press F8 to select Advanced Startup Options, and then
    select Safe Mode.

    Technical information:
    *** STOP: 0x0000007E (0xC0000005,0x00000000, 0xF88950C0,0xF8894DBC)
