1999 honda civic won't start
My 99 honda civic has 160000 miles, never gave me any problems before, till yeaterday. I could not start the car, the starter turns over, but would not crank over, had to tow it to the local repair shop. The mechanic thought it was the distributor, but that wasn't it. He now thinks it's the computer in the car, Has any one of you ever heard of computer going out on 99 honda civic? He won't order the computer, because, if that is not the problem, he can't return the computer, so they towed it to the Honda dealer today. I have to wait till tomorrow to find out what is worng with it. I need some Help, Please.

In order for car to start, it should get both fuel and spark, and it's timing should be set correctly. Read the FAQ, you have explanations on how to check for fuel and spark. Go from there.

Coil & Igniter are inside the distributor. If your mechanic bought a new distributor (with the coil and igniter inside), than it shouldn't be a problem. Check and see what your mechanic bought, and make sure you tell that to the dealer.

Well,
The local mechanic did tell me he ordered a new distributor.
But that didn't start the car.
Kind of strange, if they are inside the distributor , the new one should have worked.
Anyway,Local repair shop was going to charge me $250 for the job.
The Dealer charged me $450. I got my car back, it's running. But the yellow Engine check light is staying on. Wondering if anything elese might be wrong with it.
I did some serach for the parts price.

Don't tell anyone, but you got ripped off.
Original Honda parts are very expensive. You could have gotten a replacement for much less. Ignition coils go for 70$. Igniters MUCH less than 200$. I guess the rest they charged is the labor. 100$ for unscrewing about 9 screws and screwing them back in? That's too much if you ask me.

Just a comment. My Honda, 1999 CRV died out on me on the expressway - had it towed for $90. Mechanic called me and he is charging me $420 (this includes the labor) for a distributor assembly. He told me the part is new and would cost $270.00 plus tax and labor! So I too feel like I'm getting ripped off, but what do you do when the car is sitting in the mechanic's garage and doesn't turn on (you feel trapped)!
