    These programes have resident shields... there are other free antivirus as ClamAV, a-squared Free,Comodo AV , etc.
    BTW I use Kaspersky - it is not very expensive.

    Ive been using BitDefender for 2 yrs now. I really like it.
    Its my first all-in-one.
    Before that I used Avast and Ad-Aware with Sygate Firewall.

    Does Bit Defender free have a resident shield? I was said that BitDefender Pro is a very good software but I have never tried it.

    Symantec's Norton Anti-Virus, McAfee VirusScan, Quarterdeck ViruSweep, or Dr. Solomon's Anti-Virus. Those major developers can be relied upon to release timely periodic updates that deal with new viruses.

    I think the keyword from the original post was *free*, and most of those aren't.

    Norton Security Scan, free antivirus solution

    Just found this... I use Norton(not the free one), it works well. I hope this one helps.:)

    The best of anti-virus is Bitdefender.. Its have a free version..
