It depends on how you get it done. I highly recommend getting it done in a piercing/tattoo parlor. There they will do it with a hollow needle rather than a gun. Getting your cartilage pierced with a gun is a bad idea. The gun is not sterilized, so it can carry many germs and bacteria that go directly onto your ear when it is pierced, and the jewelry can also get stuck in the gun, and if the person piercing your ear tugs hard enough, they can tear your ear.
A hollow needle is much more sterile. They use a brand new needle never used on anyone else. Less risk for infection in the long run.
I have had it done both ways. The gun didn't hurt me, but like I said its not a good idea either. The hollow needle didn't exactly hurt, but it was a bit of a shock. It all depends on your tolerance for pain. :)

When I got mine pierced, they used a gun, and the back of the piercing didn't go onto the stud, instead it fell on the floor. The people had to literally crawl on their hands and knees to find it while I held the stud in place. Then they had to use their hands to put the back on, instead of using the gun, which was the way it was supposed to go. But, through all that, not much pain was involved. You can definitely deal with the pain, I promise.

I'm thinking about piecing my own cartilage. What if I only use the earring? No needle. Is that safe? The earrings are brand new.

I'm not being rude at all but I feel you have no right to tell someone this when you posted a thread on the same day asking about a cartilage piercing. Guns can not be sterilized, they just wipe an alcohol wipe over it which by the way doesn't kill blood born pathogens such as HIV (aids) and hepatitis. Also when using a gun, the cartilage is put under immense pressure with a blunt object being fired through it which tears the cartilage, whereas a needle is hollow and pushes the cartilage out of the way without damage.
It does hurt but its not unbearable otherwise people wouldn't get it done, its only painful to lay on the first few nights. Also, if you get a ring in your piercing it's a lot more comfortable! Id advise getting it done with a needle unless you want to put yourself at risk of serious infection, abscess or damage. Just make sure you take proper care of it. Good luck.

Honestly it doesn't hurt at all but that's just my opinion.
All you hear is like a little crunch.
Its pretty sore after and you can't sleep on it for around 3 weeks.
Salt solutions help a lot also keeping your hair out of the way and cleaning it.

I always wanted my cartilage pierced, just a simple stud. Though, my mother never wanted me to do it. I was at a friends house 2 days ago who has a piercing gun, that is her mothers who has a license for piercings. Anyway, so since I always wanted it done, my friend did it.
