Well, Maybe get them to try cleaning with you. If you let them participate, maybe you can set a timer and they will have to have everything cleaned by the tme that the timer goes off. If they start getting the idea that cleaning and helping out doesn't have to be boring, then they might find a way to keep themselves organized. I try to set a timer , and I have to get all the clothes on my floor into the laundry basket, by shooting baskets, kind of like basketball. When you do laundry, help them separate the darks and lights, by doing that, it will help learn colors. Try making cleaning and organization fun. Then they might enjoy helping with chores.

I wish you the best of luck!!

We do a 15 minute pick up at the end of each day. Everyone participates. We turn the TV off and put on some lively music. I usually put a laundry basket in the middle of the floor in the most messy room. Anything that doesn't belong in the room gets thrown in the basket. Then, we move with the basket to the next room, etc. etc.

Also, now that my son is a little older, if he leaves anything laying around, it gets put in detention. The toy stays visible but out of reach for a week. That'll teach him!

I don't pay allowance for cleaning his room. In my book that's part of his regular responsibilities.

I think it gets easier over time. Once the kids realize you aren't going to back down or stop, they'll buy in.

If they still don't help, you might consider hiding a small reward (even an existing toy) in the bottom of the mess. It's like cleaning to hunt for buried treasure!

    Good luck!
