    Monitor problem
How do I correct the moitor screen image? The print/images are compressed to the left and right edges of the screen and extended to the centre of the screen.

This occurred after a MS auto update or is this a co-incidence?

    Thanks in anticipation

    Monitor
    Hello,
    Do you mean the desktop?
Do you mean the icons on your desktop?
It could be from Windows Update.
Right click anywhere on the desktop, then left click on Arrange Icons.
Remove any checkmarks by "Auto Arrange".
This will allow you to drag your icons anywhere you wish.
If this is not what you mean, post back.

It is everything that is displayed on the screen - desktop icons, any form of writing be it in a word file or in the header of any program

    Thanks

    Monitor Driver
Perhaps the update somehow corrupted your monitor drivers depending on the model and age of your monitor. When working on computers with monitors that needed drivers, I often came across situations such as this... what version of Windows are you using and what brand is the monitor?

The OS is XP Home and the monitor is a Hansol 710A.

I have downloaded the drivers from the Hansol website and run them with no change in the circumstances.

    Thanks for taking an interest

Sorry, this is kind of a dumb question, but did you try using the adjustments on your monitor to adjust screen size, etc. maybe something got changed with the update... perhaps you can just adjust it to fit best... otherwise, I've never heard of that brand of monitor, so I have no experience with it, but perhaps you can mess with screen resolution, color quality, etc. in the display control panel also (like I said perhaps the update changed some settings for some reason)

    Hope this helps... Good Luck!

Check out your screen resolution and refresh rate settings in the display options in Windows.

Sometimes when you reinstall drivers Windows reverts back to 60 hertz refresh rate.. this can make the screen look wrong at some resolutions and is harder on the eyes than say changing it to 100 hertz.

Sorry I cannot follow you "expert" logic. If I go out and buy another monitor, regardless whether it is "better" or not, I would not need an "expert" to adjust it.

I have been to several so called computer specialists (large and small companies) who have never come across the problem. Without fail they have all suggested re-installing the drivers which is what I did in the first place without any effect.

Have you tried booting up in safe mode and seeing if it works right? Maybe it's the video card drivers and not the monitor drivers? This is tough to figure out long distance... hopefully you're not another victim of a windows service pack

    Distorted screen
I have tried booting up in the safe mode and there was no difference. I have just found that if I alter the resolution to 800 x 600 in the desk top setup I get rid of the distortion but the size icons etc is huge. Increasing the reslution reduces the sizing but brings back the distortion.

    Any ideas out there?

Win XP has 2 sizes of icons... normal and large. You may be set on large although they shouldn't be that much bigger than normal even when set on large. I think normal is 32x32 and large is 48x48. There is a program called Powerstrip you might try. It lets you do custom resolutions and such on supported hardware.

The icons were set on small and changing them to large to see what happens made no difference at all?

    Thanks for the interest

I'd try that Powerstrip program or a similar one then... other than that I don't know. Sorry.
