    Whirlpool Window Unit stopped working.
My 1991 Whirlpool Electric 17,800 BTU Window Air Conditioner has stopped working. It was running fine and cooling very well but when I went to turn it on last night, it didn't make a sound. We have checked the breakers and fuses but I am wondering if there is a fuse in the unit itself. I do not know the first thing about appliances and I am unsure of what my next move should be. Can I fix the problem myself, call a repairman or just replace the unit?

Does it make any noise at all, like a buzzing a humming or nothing at all. Honestly, Unless you are handy and can test componets it would cost about as much to get it looked at and repaired as the cost of a new unit. If you think you can tackle this and have a mulitmeter for testing purposes post back and I or someone else here can more than likely help you get it up and going. Good Luck

It makes no noise at all. I was hoping it was a fuse in the unit itself but I am unsure about that. I can see no burnt wires and everything "appears" normal as I left it. What other steps can I take without calling a repairman or replacing the unit?

Ok If you are sure you have voltage at he outlet (Plug something in that work to verify if 120v or if 220 check with meter) If power there check the selector switch. Do you have power there. Check this and post back with results
