Hi my dog was throwing up bile and could note even hold down water for 2 days so I brought her to the vet. The vet gave her an injection and it has made her worse she is very thirsty but as soon as she drinks it comes up again. I have tried feeding her bits of food but she won't eat anything. She has lost a lot of weight and barely drags herself around. Any suggestions on what I could give her?

Take her back to the vets immediately, it doesn't take long for them to dehydrate, in the meantime, make her up some plain rice, lots of water...

When my dachshund has had seizures and vomited a lot before, the vet injected fluids under the skin at his neck to prevent dehydration. Ask the vet if this should be done.

I agree, take this dog to the vet to rehydrate right away. Our Dach/Russell cross pup couldn't keep food down when we first got him. Vomited yellow bile which stained the carpets. We've always had large dogs and we thought a little one would cost less to feed... wow, were we wrong! The vet put him on a perscription diet for a month and we gradually worked him up to high quality kibble. Still, he must have a few spoonfuls of a good quality canned dog food first thing in the morning before getting his kibble. If we overlook starting his day this way, he starts vomiting and having hiccups and he is now 2 years old. So, good luck, hopefully your vet can get things settled down... they're worth it.

I took my dachshund to the vet twice and they injected her with the same medicine each time. She has now gone in for the third time to go on a drip as she was too weak to eat or hold down food. She is 9 and the vet said it could be the kidneys as there was blood in her stool. I am currently waiting to hear if she will live or not. This is an awful time.

I would suggest you take your doggie somewhere else. My doxie was very sick, not eating or drinking, vomiting. She had to be in the emergency vet for days just to get hydrated. She had 2 surgeries in one week. My doggy has gone through cat scan, mri's, and ultrasound. The doctors (regular vet & specialists) could not figure out what caused her sickness, however, the right medication was found for her and now she's all better. It never hurt getting a second opinion. Good Luck.

We just lost our Dachshund this morning after dealing with, what sounds like similar symptoms. 2 vets could not find out what to do so we were just giving fluids and he passed away in his sleep.
What did your dog have?

Given the fact that the last post was in 2005, I doubt any of them will answer. I saw how new yours was, though and hope you've gotten some answers since we're looking at exactly the same answer and fear we may lose our dachshund very soon. If so, please write.

While I can't answer for the original poster, I can answer for me. Unfortunately, we had to put Dalghryn to sleep the day after I posted. Our vet strongly suspected a malignancy in either the stomack wall or the brain. Every other option had been looked into and ruled out, either due to symptoms or a lack of response to treatment. Since June he'd become diabetic and developed a bad heart murmur. There were other issues as well. We discussed an MRI, however it only would have proven their suspicions, and we had already ruled out treating a malignancy.

My wife and I are heartbroken. This has been among the most difficult days of my life. He did give us twelve wonderful years, though, and for that I'll always be thankful.

:eek::( I am so sorry to hear that. My brother had a dog that passed after 12 years recently so I do hear your upset and can imagine what you are going thru'. He is in the process of adopting another dog... from a shelter. This one is a heart rendering story as the dog was physically abused and was left w/ three legs. It's a small dog and in DIRE need of a "forever home". Anyhow, my brother has a family w/ 3 kids and this dog is about to come into this world and be the happiest animal on God's green earth... (especially since I'm an AMAZING dog trainer... so this dog will be proofed within the month and live HAPPILY EVER AFTER!).

Nothing can make your heart unbreak over the loss of a dear pet, I know this. I have a few dogs myself and they are getting old and a couple of them are already showing signs of certain age related illnesses. But we CAN give opportunity to another dog to be the lucky one to have our hearts and restart the process and cultivation of another doggy and human "love affair"... lol. So MANY dogs out there to love... they need us!

I HIGHLY recommend refalling in love... it's an awesome way to heal. Xo

We've already discussed adopting another dog, and will likely do so in the future. For now, I'm still grieving the loss of my best little buddy and we have a human baby on the way. In time we will. Now is just not the time. Thanks for your comcern and compassion.

Dalghryn, CONGRATULATIONS on your human babyyyyyyyyyyy;);) WOWWWW! That is also a super awesome way to help put the grieving in perspective...
