Bathtub leaks only when tub spout running
    Hello,

My upstairs bathroon is leaking onto the ceiling of another bathroom in a finished basement. I removed the drop ceiling and I'm able to see the tub and the pipes from the downstairs bathroom and it definitely is only leaking when the tub faucet is running. Once I change the diverter to the shower it's fine.

The water looks like it's dripping from the copper pipe that goes into the tub wall (fiberglass). Although I can see the pipes from downstairs, I can't reach up to get to them due to the subflooring. I was wondering if this could be as simple as replacing the faucet or if it was more likely the copper pipe itself. I'd like to be able to take care of this without having to call a plumber. I'd really appreciate any suggestions!

    Thanks,
    Matt

    Hi Matt:

Sounds like you have a diverter tub spout that should be easy to remove and then replace with a new universal diverter tub spout!

I think the o-ring has failed and will most likely just be easiest to replace the entire spout.

The old spout will either twist off counterclockwise, or the old spout will have a recessed notch in the base of the spout near the wall where an allen wrench fits up and inside a screw that will need to be loosened to remove the spout!

    See pictures below.

If this is the notched spout that requires an allen wrench to remove, when installing the new spout be sure to lubricate the copper pipe a bit with plumber's silicone grease or a simple plumber's grease to lubricate the o-ring so this doesn't happem in the future!

If it a simple threaded fit to the spout, then use a little teflon tape around the threads before installing new spout.

Let me know what you think. Good luck!

    Mark

I replaced my tub spout which was leaking water when the shower diverter was lifted. The new one leaks just as much. I thought maybe there isn't enough water pressure to seal the diverter. I have another shower with the same spout and it doesn't leak. Could there be a problem somewhere else?
