Our Kenmore washer hums when turned on and we believe it may be due to worn motor brushes. How can we be certain and if so, how do we replace the brushed in this motor?

Take the motor to a local motor shop to be repaired. They will tell you if the motor is having problems or not. NOTE: for the past few years I have found it cheaper to just buy a new motor. Good luck finding the brushes for that motor. Unless the motor shop has them. The parts houses I deal with do not sell the brushes.

PS you can always disconnect the motor from the unit and try to run. That will tell you if it will spin the motor or not but will not tell you if it is strong enough to turn the agitator or spin the tub.

Hi on that washer , It could be the motor coupler , That drives the tranny. Tilt the washer back, & check under , for rubber filings. If you see some , Replace the motor coupling I can send you A break down of the washer

Thanks for you help. Looking at my copy of the parts drawings I can't find anything labeled "motor coupler". The only thing I see connecting the motor to the tranny is a couple pulleys and a drive belt. Unfortunately, by the time we had turned the washer onto its side, any rubber filings were gone. Now when we try to start the motor smoke comes out of it, so something is definitely binding things beyond the starter's ability to turn the motor around.
