Adjust the valves, very rare for a compression release to fail. Compression release is very dependent on valve clearence.

Good answer, should be as esquire stated

Sounds like a fuel starve, I would replace or clean fuel filter in the fuel tank and make sure vent in fuelcap is clear.

It is a bakelite material and usuall the wires breaking off are a symptom of a cooked electric clutch. If no sign of overheating of clutch take a pocket knife or other tool and try to find end of...

Buy an oil that specifies ratio, oils on the market are ratio specific with no relevance to the engine. If you buy pre- measured pouches or bottles of oil mix as specified on container NOT engine.

The diagrahms are sometimes located under the belly of the mower or under the foot rests.

Check to see if fuel is entering the crankcase by checking level and smelling oil. This would cause the level to rise and smoke considerably. The other possibility is that the ignition coil is dead...

Ignition timing is not adjustable, the flywheel is kept in time with the magneto (coil) by a timing pin that shear. It would need to be replaced.

Many times the diagrham is located under the mower on the foot rest.

Sounds like water to me also, you can also disconect fuel line from carb and drain that way. Look into container for signs of water, it will pool up in the bottom and separate from gas.

Look up your model# on the craftsman web site Welcome to the Parts Store. Look at the schematic and see what holds it in. I believe you may also purchase service manuals but the breakdowns are free....

Put the fuel in a 4-stroke and start over, No known method that is simple.

There is a small red wire coming from positive side of battery, follow it to fuse holder, here is some additional info for diagnostics
You will need a volt meter and set it to DC volts

Check spark arrestor screen in muffler, improper oil ratios and or half throttle operation will carbon up exhaust and cause loss of power. Also check and wash air filter.

You can try triggering the gun multiple times or turning the water off in mid use and turning it back on. This machine has a flow activated unloader or pressure regulator and needs to be "fooled"....

Sorry, let me clarify. Rotate engine until both valves are compltely closed and piston is on top. This is where you would set the clearance. Compression stroke.
Don
-
You asked how to find TDC< what don't you understand. The answer is bring the piston to the top. If you are still confused clarify what you would like to know.

Private message me with a phone number and time I can contact you, let me go through this with a little more detail and solve the problem.

Remove spark plug and bring piston all the way to the top, by the way a loose pulley under the engine will cause the same problem.

I will clarify for anyone finding this post in the future, DO NOT use a 50:1 ratio with a 16:1 oil because the manufacturer suggests 50:1. They are in the oil business as well and are telling you...
-
The manufacturers recommend you use their oil and base the ratio on that information. A 2-cycle engine is a 2-cycle engine, they get the lubrication needed from the fuel oil mix, the method of...
-
Mixture ratios for 2-cycle engines are the same, all two strokes require the proper amount of oil per part fuel. That is determined by oil not machine. With today's oil a 32:1 seems safe but I would...

DO NOT replace breather, the oil level is high due to fuel leaking into crankcase from carburetor. VERY common problem. Drain oil and put in fresh to proper level run machine again and see if problem...

The batterys are very poor in this equipment, try jump starting it from a 12-Volt source. You are not getting enough poop to the starter, it takes a lot.

I am glad my previous advice worked. You are right black smoke is an air/fuel mixture problem. The fuel is delivered to the combustion chamber (cylinder) through a carefully sized nozzle in the carb,...

When working for the local john deere dealer we would heat the hub red hot and douse with ice water. Worked every time.

It is running extremely lean, either the oil mixture is off or the carb adjustment is off. You will cook the engine without fixing the problem. Try turning the "H" carb screw counter clockwise 1/8...

I would agree with zargy, there are many other things that can cause the same symptoms. Fuel pumps very very rarely fail and they are replaced often. Fuel cut solenoid on the bottom of the carb will...

Correct, in effect it is an alternator. Riding lawn mowers are notorious for poor batterys. The run time to replenish the juice used to start it is about two hours. Constant stops and starts are hard...

Pushed a button, sorry if I have offended you mike. Let me try again without sarcasm.
When a mower is tipped up the oil from the crankcase can find its way into the carburetor throat via the vent...

Thank you for correcting my mistake, the forum is used as a tool by many, posting what DID work would be a great help.

Air filter has a paper element and is probably soaked. Try it without and see if that works.

Check the flow of fuel from tank to carb, it may be a partial block in the tank or filter. Check the fuel cap vent as well and lastly does it have a fuel cut solenoid on the bottom of the carb? These...

I hasve seen it many a time, looks like a locamotive. No need to remove muffler just let it burn out. Unlike oil in the cylinder the oil in the muffler has to burn out by heat alone with no help from...

If you have the carb removed and see the stem (main nozzle) remove it, behind that you will find a pilot jet remove it also (presses in) and clean both well.

Adjust the valves, you have a compression release that will not work with a lot of valve clearance.

Those briggs starters bind up, try rotating engine from underneath to dislodge the gear.

It was as ballenger said more than likely and there was a piece of debris under the inlet needle that has long since passed. I would think that no damage was done and being an overhead valve will...

Hunting is a sign of fuel starve. Fuel getting into the bowl is the easy part, once in the bowl it is drawn into the throat up through the stem and through a proper sized nozzle. If these are...

Yep, there are other designs but after 30 years of working in the OPE industry you can tell what kind by the description of the failure. It is a common description of the failure associated with a...

Fuel has leaked past the carburator and into crankcase causing level to rise. Probably a piece of debris in the carburetor. Change oil start and let run 5 minutes and do it again.

The switch or panel should be marked. All the way left is "off" middle is "run" right is "start"
