    When they are afraid of hurting the other person with an outright break-up. When they want to let the other person down "easy". When they don't want to feel guilty for terminating the relationship. When they are trying to keep the breakee around as a backup plan in case the new thing doesn't work out. When they want to see if the grass is greener, with out being called a cheater because technically they're on a break with you.
