Tenant wants prorated rent for last month of lease
My tenants do not want to move out of the condo that they have been renting for 2 years. In November of this year, they experienced some loss of electricity in the kitchen. Everything works except the ceiling light. We did not repair it because of the expense. We had already decided not to renew their lease and gave them more than a 30 day notice. Now they claim that because we did not do the repairs, they should not have to pay the full month's rent this month. What is the best way to handle this situation?

What other light is there in the kitchen,? You have a responsibility to have light in the rooms people are renting. To be honest if the kitchen light in my house had went out, and you did not fix it, I would be withholding my rent and getting it fixed and making you pay.

So to be honest, I would let them have the prorated rent and consider yourself lucky they are nicer about it than most people would be.
** and hope they don't show up here asking us what else they can do against you.

Tell you what, turn YOUR kitch light off for the next month, move in some floor lamps, maybe carry a flashlight with you to cook?
