Retrieving property left behind on an apartment after lease is up
I purchased a washing machine for a CA apartment that my xgf and I were living in earlier this year. Our relationship ended, and I moved out. The apartment is leased under her name.

She moved out and into another place mid-summer. Since around that time, I've been in touch with the ex-landlord about my intentions to acquire the washer. He told me that he'd wait and see if she was interested in picking it up, and if not, it was mine.

So about 3 months later, after sparring emails I finally call him again, and small talk. He basically said that property left after 90 days becomes the possession of the landlord. He didn't even bother to compensate me for the equipment and I feel like I was strung all along.

What can I do about either getting the machine back or getting compensated for it?

    You really can't,

    1. you should have taken it when you moved out with you.

    2. you should have on gotten with the exgirl friend to go over and pick it up.

At least be there in person on the last day of the lease to pick it up.

A this point, lease is over, the item left, girlfriend left it, the landlord was free to dispose of it.

Why would he lead me on then? He's this hippie landlord and I just can't get over the fact that he FAILED to mention this to me earlier and waste my time each time I'd call/email. Is there a statue somewhere online that describes this?

I'm going to write him a sternly worded letter of how upsetting this is.
