Previous Landlord Claiming I Owe Money and is Suing
I moved out of a townhouse and I gave the landlord my notice to move on may 1st so I could move out on June 30th so this covers the 60 days required. The landlord refused to sign our copy of the letter stating that he had to process it through the rental company and we would get a copy later. He then sent us a bill claiming that we did not give the letter until the 13th of may and we now owe rent for the month of July. Then he sent us a letter saying if he could rent the unit on July 20th we would not be responsible for the rent from the 20th until the 31st of July. We signed this letter and now they are saying by us signing this letter we have agreed to pay up to the 20th. I do not have a lot of money and no money for a lawyer, what I'm wondering is if there anything we can do to avoid this debt.

Why would you sign that letter? Did you submit your notice in writing? If not, why not.

What it comes down to is proving that you gave sufficient notice. If you can, then let him sue you and you present your proof in court. If its sufficient, then you will win. If not then you will lose.

Do you have proof you submitted the letter may 1? I agree with Scott on the rest re: court, if you have proof, you win, if landlord has proof, he wins.
