I would put up some window shades.
I know that sounds like a sarcastic answer, please understand that its not. Im being sincere. I think you will actually come to adapt and even enjoy the street light. You just have to look at all of the positives:

No more needed to leave a porch light on.

They discourage the "shady element" where loiterers like to hang out and vandalize things.

They provide a kind of "night light" in the house, so you can see your way around when you get up in the middle of the night.

Your neighbor either put up a dusk to dawn light himself, which he will be paying an additional $10-$20 per month on HIS electric, either that, or he is paying the electric company to have one of their street lamps installed, which too carries a monthly fee. Take comfort, you don't have to pay anything for the conveince!

I live in town, on a corner lot where there is a street lamp at the intersection. I love it. Especially in this part of town where "the freaks come out at night". And the best part is, the town pays for it! (muahaha)

All of the people who live in my neighborhood appricaite good illumination at night. Many of my neighbors have the towns street lights and many motion lights in their back yard. Your neighbor may have just came from a place like this, and night lighthing is just in his blood.

Talk to him and find out his reasons for putting it up.

Yep I put one in my side yard the first week we lived in the new house.'

As noted it will help keep the bad guys away, and this is normally a good thing after you get used to it.

And it is his yard and a lot of people have these.

As suggested, better and heavier blinds and curtons will help your house stay darker inside
