    Landlord has to replace carpet?
I know this question has been posted before. Sorry. Does carpet need to be replaced after a certain number of years in a rental?

I do not know of any state where this is a requirement. Good landlords, though (in my opinion as a landlord) would do something for you after being in the apartment for a long period IF the carpet has been taken care of reasonably.

If a tenant has been in one of my apartments for 10 years, I am happy to consider replacing his carpet... but if I see that it is damaged (cigarette burns, nasty spill stains that were never cleaned, etc.) then I'd probably not replace it but would offer to have it cleaned instead.

Rentals complexes here have a certified carpet cleaner clean the carpet to put the liability on them if there is a foreign allergen left over from previous tenant Its against the rental laws here to put new carpet over old and use the old as a padding

What's the reason for the question?

The reason for the question is my daughter's belief about her new rental. She just moved into a place that is really nice. The carpet is cream-colored. Just going up and down the stairs is going to darken it unless she vacuums daily or more. I suggested plastic stair runners 'cause I know these guys won't vacuum daily or take their shoes off at the front door.

She said that she isn't going to worry about it because, by law, "every two years a landlord is required to replace the carpet."

I think the daughter is suffering from urban mythology. Unless she has that 2 year thing written into a lease agreement, no "tenant rights" regulation or legislation makes any provisions for carpets except when tenants leave.
