Irregular periods, how do I know if I am pregnant?
Hi there.. I hope someone out there has some answers to my problem, I have always had irregular periods with 2 or 3 cycles crossing even 100 days. I have consulted many doctors but everyone assured me (after required examinations / tests) that I was perfectly normal and I should ignore it. Now we have been Trying to conceive for more than a year.. I have been keeping track of the dates as well as every other symptom, but have been unable to pin-point my day of ovulation. Consequently, we have been missing having sex on the correct days... but we have had many false alarms of pregnancy, without it actually being so. Finally when I get my period and count back 14 days, I realise that we have not had sex anywhere close to that date. I am aware many sympoms are felt probably because you so badly want to be pregnant and many of them are also indicative of an oncoming period, but I find myself in this situation again. It is 78 days since my last period and three days back I got a negative result on hpt. I feel tired most of the time, get hunger pangs, drink a lot of water (usually I struggle to drink half a liter a day, but now I easily crave for 1.5 litres or even more). I have been having slightly thin white discharge too for more than three weeks now. Normally this happens only for a couple of days before my period. My stomach has also bloated and I am looking pregnant. What I am surprised is that in spite of having an excellent appetite and eating well, I feel so tired. There are some rare times when I feel full of energy and raring to go but that's hardly a day in the entire week.

Oh yes, and normally one long cycle of 80 to 90 days is always followed by at least two cycles of 30 to 40 days for me,but this time my previous cycle was around 95 days and this is the immediate next one.

Does anyone have any clues as to what may be happening? Are there chances that I may be pregnant? Has anyone experienced such irregular periods and been able to correctly predict their ovulation date? If yes, please let me know how.

With very irregular cycles, ovulation can be difficult to predict. It is possible, and likely, that ovulation is not occurring on a regular basis, so that will obviously limit the opportunities for pregnancy to be achieved.

Sometimes medications, such as birth control pills, can be used to help regulate cycles. This sounds as though it goes against the goal, but it can be enough to get hormones back on track after a short term use. Medications, such as Provera, can help with regulating cycles, but this does not mean ovulation is occurring. Separate testing would be needed to determine that.

Hormone testing might also become necessary to determine if other medications would be more beneficial in the event of a hormone imbalance.

With irregular cycles, a lack of periods will not be a reliable indicator of pregnancy, so other possible symptoms would have to be present or just occasional testing for pregnancy to see if it comes up positive.
