Yes, it is safe as long as you are not doubling up on the folic acid. You should look on the prenatal vitamins to see if there is already a daily allowance for folic acid. Usually there is, so the prenatals will be all you will need.

Typically you will not get and "symptoms" or side-effects from vitamins. Prenatals may make your fingernails grow longer and stronger, but that is usually about all.

It is VERY good for your health. I am 42 and take prenatal vitamins every day. However, it will not increase your chances of getting pregnant. You ovulate every month, so that will not change.

It will certainly maintain your health when you do become pregnant, but it will not increase any chances whatsoever. That is why they made fertility drugs.

Think about it this way. If prenatal vitamins increased the chances of getting pregnant we would not have the need for fertility specialists. I know it sucks, but that is reality.

My wife was prescribed 5 mg folic acid as a daily supplement, plus prenatel which normally has 1 mg. Normally for prepregnancy and trying and during. The only reason for high levels of folic acid is anybody that has any genetic problems in family history. Spina bifida, repeated miscarriages, all these things folic acid is known to decrease and help prevent. Too much is not good eighter. My wife takes the 5 mg folic acid in the afternoon and she takes the prenatel in the evening. Side effects. Some people are sensitive to prenatels so a snack with prenatel is good. Taken in the evening is best. PLEASE TAKE EVERYTHING AS PRESCRIBED, NOT ANYTHING MORE, because too much of anything could have the opposite effect you are trying to achieve.

Question: Why are you taking this extra folic acid? If you already get it in your prenatel and you have no medical conditions or genetic problems in the family and your not on any other medication then there should be no reason to take extra folic acid.
Question for you is it 400 UI, or G Or MG. Everybody gets mixed up with these. So for example. 400 UI would equal 4mg. So 800 UI would be considered 8mg. I do not even know if I am correct with this. As far as 5 mg folic acid. Comes in prescription form here in Canada. You can get over the counter stuff on the vitamin rack that only has 1 mg. Too much folic acid is not good. You need to figure out exactly how the measurements read. Anyway, too much folic acid is not good at all... There has been some studies that suggest that too much folic acid over time can actually be linked to increase chanches of getting breast cancer. Possible link but there are no guidelines as to what is too much. Many women who are at the age of prepregancy and has had genetic problems in the family or even certain medical conditions for example epilepsy, would be advised to take more then the recommended dose. Folic acid helps in the aid of cell growth and is very important. Like with anything too much is not a good thing. So you need to figure out exactly how much is in this pill.
