I have just bought a new house and know nothing about well pumps. I have replumbed my house and it is time for me to put water through the pipes. The well pump has not been used in about 6-7 months. I have turned on the pump and it is running but there is no psi building in the pipes. There is water in the tank. The pressure switch is closed and remains that way the whole time. I have left the pump running for about 30 minutes with no response in the psi gauge and no water in the pipes. What can the problem be? Someone told me that it is probably the pressure switch but I am unable to tell how to test it out by manually overriding it. People say to override it but nobody can tell me how that's done. Im guessing you just pull the contact points apart but having 240 volts through there, it's not something I want to guess about! Please help thanks.

Sounds to me like your pump needs to be primed. Do niot let it run for long periods. You'll burn out the seals. To prime the pump first turn the pump off at the breaker box and look up on top of the impeller cage to find a small threaded opening that has a plug or a pressure gage installed. Open it up and pour water into it until it runs out. Close the hole and turn the piump back on. You should be pumping now. NOTE: If you can not fill the impeller cage to overflowing then that indicates a faulty foot/ckeck valve that mnust be replaced before the system will pump to pressure. Good lucki, Tom
