Water backing up into apartment behind house
 My mom just moved into an apartment in our back yard. She noticed the toilet had water leaking under it so my husband took out the toilet to replace the wax ring and found that the flange was broken on one side where the bolt for the toilet goes. He went to Home Depot and bought the piece that you can put over the flange to fix the problem. He screwed the new piece into the concrete floor and sealed with caulking and let dry for 24hrs. The next day he installed a brand new toilet and wax ring and we still have the problem.
When we flush the toilet or take a shower in the main house (home in front of apartment) water will leak from under my moms toilet in the apartment and smells like sewer really bad  . What else could be the problem?

City sewer or septic tank? The sewer from both units are tied together and you have a blockage downstream from the apartment. Locate the apartment clean out, open it up and snake out the line. When you see the water drain out of the line then you know you have hit the clog. Good luck, tom
