    Washing machine overflow but main supply/machine were off
    Went away on Tues and came back today. Before I left I shut off the main water supply at the hot water heater. I turned on fawcett in the kitchen to see if it was off. Trickled for a second so I assumed it was off. Came back tonight and washing machine was filled to the top and I think it overflowed because The floor is wet. How could it fill up without anyone turning it on, epcially when main supply was off?? Thanks.

    Was the valve that you turned off at the water heater a valve that turns off all of the water to the house or just the water going into the water heater.

    If you only turned off the water to the water heater there is a possibility that your water valve in the washing machine failed to keep the clold water from entering the washing machine. Some washer valves fail and when they do, and you turn the hot water off it lets the cold water trickle in. Somethng like the way a Sloan flush valve works on a commode, if the diaphram can not get water on the top of it ir will not turn off the water entering the commode.

    It turns off water to the whole house.

    This bothers me. Typically a house shut off isn't any where near the water heater. The house shut off's located outside the house if on a slab and in the basement where the service enters. Are you on a pump or city water? Get back to me with your answer as there's something I want you to try. Regards, tom

    It's city water. I'm in Virginia, so we have crawl spaces and no basement. There is a shutoff in the front yard that you have to use the big "plumbing wrench" thing or whatever it's called. What did you want me to try?

    Usually there are two shut off valves: One is by the street / water meter / and you need big wrench to close it. The other one should be on the side of your house ( or in front sometimes ) that has a handle and you should be able to shut it off by hand...

    This is very strange. Even if you left the water on to the house, your washing machine should not over flow(unless it is overflowing from the washer standpipe.) Are you sure you didn't have a load of wash going when you left? Sounds like a leaky washing machine.

    This happened to me. I shut off the water at my meter (city water). Located in crawl space.
    Turned off my water heater.
    The washing machine was plugged in but turned off and the door was open.
    Came home from vacation to find a washing machine full of water and a very wet floor (several gallons).
    Have you found out what caused your problem??
