    You have a partial blockage downstream from the toilet. The solution is to snake and clear the drain line. To try this yourself you will need a power snake and instructions.     Thanks so much for your response. I thought I could do it myself, but it sounds very complicated. Obviously, I will have to get a plumber. Is there such a thing as a snake I could do myself through the toilet or does everything have to be done on the roof?

    Sorry Betty but snaking from the toilet involves pulling it up and sending a snake down the closet bend. This has to come down from a roof vent. This is a hassle as you'll have to rent a power snake and climb up on the roof.

    Dave, Not everybody has basements, in my area all our buildings are on slabs. If this were the case the entire house would be clogged up and she would have water coming up from the floor drain. I don't think this is a blockage in the main. I think it's a branch blockage. Regards, Tom
