    They are used in sump pumps but the float lifts and lowers a switch lever. Should be available from an electrical supply company.

    Yes ! I have a sump pump in basemt'. On my pump the switch is on the moter. The float is the same as what used to be used in toilet tanks (bulb type not modern type) Also the float does not slide on the metal rod, it is attached to the rod at bottom. There are 2 rubber washers/stops you position on the rod near the area of the switch. As water fills up the sump tank, the rod goes loosly up through a metal type ring holding bracket switch. The rubber stop pushes the switch up and on, draining the tank. As the sump tank empties and the float goes down the 2nd stop pushes the switch down and off. I've experimented until I liked the fill amount and drain times.
