Is it a Moen Château? The hot and cold backwards means the handle needs to be removed and put back on after turning it 180 degrees. It is spinning 360 degrees either because it is the wrong handle(there is a difference between shower and lav handles, and positemp handles), or you are missing an extension for the handle(center piece inside the handle should come out as far as the outside perimeter of handle on a tub/shower valve) or you didn't put the sleeve back over the valve before putting handle on. Let me know if this helps. Good Luck!
