Plumbing, Shower whistles when turned on
What makes my shower whistle when I pull up the lever to turn the shower on? If I turn the water to real hot it stops.

Calcium build up in the shower head will cause the whistling get you some CLR- calcium, lime, and rust remover from Wal-Mart. Remove the shower head, in a bowl pour the CLR. Then drop the shower head in and let sit for a couple hours. Then remove and rinse. Put the head back on and see if it is fixed,if it still does you need to replace the shower head.

Note: you can also use vinegar instead of CLR, Good Luck.

Normally I would agree with John on this quick fix but your sound changes when you switch to all hot water. I think you have a slight obstruction in the cold inlet of your mixing valve. Pull the cartridge and I'll bet you a cold one you will find some bits of debris caught in the inlet, just blow and rinse them out.

Also a friend of mine just showed me a quick trick when it is your shower head. He puts several ounces of vinegar or CLR in a plastic bag and then bags the shower head still attached with a rubber band. Several hours of soaking and the head was like new.

    Hey Bob and John,
Thanks for the advice, but I think I fixed it!! No whistling this morning. I had to take off the spout because when I pulled the lever up then it started whistling a few minutes after that, but if I jiggled it the sound changed. I do have a water softener which helps with this water. Anyway I cleaned the lever and the inside of the spout with CLR, then used some fine sand paper and removed the green build up on the copper pipe, put the spout back on, recaulked it, and low and behold it is doing great so far ;)
