We have a 4 year old townhome with the laundry room on the third floor. The builder did not install an overflow drain nor a pan with a drain for the washing machine. It has the one drain for regular usage. Just in case of an emergency, what can I do to have a secondary overflow drain that would not involve cutting into the floor or into the drywall?

Let me show you what a rough in for a washer station consists of. (see image) Any way you look at it you're going to hafta open up the wall unless the present drain can be converted. So, whadda you think? Tom

I've never heard of a washing machine overflow drain. Only option would be to install a floor drain. Also, I've never heard of installing a pan with a drian under a washing machine. These types of pans are only used on water heaters as far as I know. Maybe I'm missing something here. I really , really hope one of the other pros here will give there advice.

Sorry Tom, I was typing while you answered. Sounds like they have the regular drain for the washer, but are looking for some sort of backup drain in case the washer overflows?? Im confused.
