Hello:

I've got a ten year old Moen Two Handle Tub & Shower Faucet. I've developed a leak, is there a way to remove the 1224 type stem from the faucet? I was able to remove most of the assembly and I can see the stem; but, it's recessed into the flange nipple. The flange nibble appears to directly connected to the plumbing. I don't believe there's anything fastening the stem in place and I should be able to just pull it straight out; but, it won't budge and I'm lost for words.

Any assistance is greatly appreciated.:o

Yes, that's what I thought too; but, thanks for the info, finially got the darn thing out, I inserted a screw into the stem, grabbed it with plyers and wiggled and yanked, 10w 40 the thing, it finially came out. Looks like ten years later, buildup, the plastic stem somehow seized up in the plumbing. Never say anything like that before, took the day to get this bigger out.

Moen only warranties OEM/builder equipment for 5 yrs.
I thought that the cartridge puller only works with metal cartridges and not plastic ones?
Am I wrong?

You can usually pull them straight out with a plyers or slide hammer. In some installations you need a Moen puller found at many hardqare stores. Maybe this will help Installation Help / Animated Tutorial - Installing the Moen 1225 / 1200 Cartridge

You do know about Moen's lifetime warranty don't you? They will replace that cartrdige free.

Moen actually sells tool that will remove their stems.

Well yes they do sell them but they don't make them. Its quicker and easier to go to ACE down the street and pick one up. My ACE will rent you a cartridge puller so you only spend a few bucks. A plumber will need one in his bag 24/7/365

And here's what it looks like,(see image) ask for a Moen Cartridge Puller. Always a handy tool to have around if you have Moen valves.
The reason that cartridges size up in the valve body is that the "O" rings swell up and lock the cartridge in place. This is also what makes old cartridges turn and pull out so hard. Good luck, Tom

Usually a two handle cartridge will just pull out. If you put the handle screw in the stem put pliers on it and tap out on the pliers with a hammer it will tap out. Some models did have a cartridge nut that needs to be removed before the cartridge will come out. If you need more info Moen has a great techncial support department; 800-289-6636.
