I noticed that my laundry room has started to smell recently. I took the cover off my sump pump & it smells really bad, so I poured some water in it, about 4 hours latter water came out of my floor drain in my bsmt. And partially flooded my bsmt. How is that possible since the floor drain is tied into my sewer & not my sump pump

It shouldn't be possible. The two are separate systems, in fact it's illegal to tie a sump or roof drain into the sewer system. How do you know that it was the same water you poured in the sump? Same amount? If it were me I would put food coloring in a bucket of water and pour it in the pit and keep a eye on the floor drain to see if it really was sump water that came back up out of the floor drain or just a coincidence.
As for the smell in your sump.
You have bacteria growing in your pit. Wash it down with bleach to eliminate it. Good luck and let me know about the floor drain. Tom

Every few years or so I totally pump out all the water in my pit, I usually wait until August during drought season. Once the pit is empty, I unplug the sump pump and then I use a shop vac and vac out all the gunk, June bugs, crickets etc. I empty the vac in my woods and then I throw some bleach into the sump pit for a little bit, plug back in the pump and run a couple of loads of laundry. Smell is eliminated. The bacteria is the cause of the smell and it's existence is always the result of rotting organic material.
