Rust from galvanized piping, or dirt from a ruptured water line.

If it's just rust, most of it will work it's way out of the system after a few days of normal use.

If your on city water you might check your water meter, if its spinning like crazy then most likely you have a water line break underground. You might also call the water dept. and see if they will come out and check the meter. Has the water dept. had any water line breaks? If your on well water then some how you need to see if the pump is running all the time.

If you have older, galvanized plumbing, the pipes are coated inside with loads of flaky rust. A pipe that freezes, then thaws, can flake some of that rust off into the water flow multiple ways, by either ice chunks scraping it off, or the sudden flow of water pressure after sitting for awhile frozen. Hopefully it will rinse out soon, but check your faucet aeraors (the little screen in the faucet head) for chunks of sediment. If the rust is coming from the hot water line only, it could be rust and sediment have built up in the water heater, and the tank should be bled and refilled.
