    Clogged drain
    Hello,

12 days after moving into our apartment we noticed a leak under the kitchen sink and the sink was very slow to drain. We notified the apartment complex and they determined that they needed to call an outside company to snake the drain. The leak caused by the clogged drain caused damage to the laminate flooring in our living room. The company that snaked the drain determined that the clog was due to grease build up. The apartment management is now holding us responsible for the cost of repair to the floors because they believe us to be the source of the issue. I have NEVER used my sink as a grease disposal, I know much better than that. Is it even possible to clog a drain with grease after only 12 days of use? Or, is this more likely to be a pr-existing issue from prior tenants? Any response to this issue would be very much appreciated!

Thank you for taking the time to read this,
    Diana

It very much is possible to clog a drain with grease in only 2 weeks. Lots of stuff has grease... like almost everything with meat in it... not just a pan of bacon fat or used crisco. Without seeing what you cook on a daily basis it would be hard to point fingers however.

The fact it wasn't clogged up on day one or two is enough for them to argue it wasn't pre-existing. That's not to say it wasn't somewhat restricted before... but nobody can prove that... just that is was free flowing when you moved in as was apparent right up until the incident..

Because I own my own house and I'm on the hook for problems like this... everythign cooked sits until room temprature to allow fats to solidify, so they can be skimed and put in the trash with the remaining liquids put through the garbage disposal.

Grease and food . Especially if you have a garbage disposal, can clog a kitchen drain line. Now this could have been building up be3fore you moved in. We'll never know. It just happened on your watch and that makes you responsible. Sorry, Tom
