    Caulk needed around top or bottom edge of shower drain strainer?
    My shower drain strainer was cheap plastic and it broke, so I'm replacing it with an Oatey 4.25" metal strainer. It is the snap-in type with the ears that extend out from the four small tabs, shown on the bottom of this page:

    I don't see how it "snaps" into the existing drain pipe, but it does fit in fairly well since it's the exact diameter of the drain. I removed the existing bead of caulk around the rim of the drain in order for the new strainer to set down on it without wobbling.

    Do I apply caulk around the top of the strainer rim after it is installed in the drain, or do I apply the caulk to the drain rim before installing the strainer (underneath the rim of the strainer)? Maybe no caulk is necessary at all, but I'm not sure if that will lead to a leaking drain.

    Thanks for any help. I have very little plumbing knowledge beyond simple toilet repairs.

    You will form a small rope of plumbers putty or Silicon Jel UNDERthe lip if the drain for a seal, (see image) Good luck, n Tom

    Tom posted the wrong picture, but I'm sure you get the idea... ;) You will need to remove the old shower strainer from up top and from underneath to install this strainer.

    Use Silicone caulking and follow the directions as shown at the wingtite website (click on link):

    What's wrong with my picture? Don't they still use plumbers putty or Silicon Jel under the drain lip for a seal? Please explain, Thanks, Tom

    Hi Tom

    Your picture shows a tub waste and overflow FACEPLATE... not a shower strainer is all... ;)
