    Can one use foam instead of mud when replacing a tub?
    I am trying to confirm the following: I was told that I could use foam as my base instead of mud under my tub replacement. I asked the guys at my local Home Depot if this was doable and got both yes and no responses. I am thinking that foam would be much easier to work with but looking for the best solution.

    Anyone have comments or suggestions here?

    Hi BIMC...

    Yeah... getting some mixed messages, huh?

    The fact is that foam compresses over time and will eventually lead to a softening of the tub floor over time.

    Foam can not only compress, but when installed improperly for these applications can actually expand and crack the tub floor, so basically the stuff is pure evil and should be avoided altogether.

    Opt. for STRUCTOLITE (if you can find it) as it is super light weight and dries rock hard overnight. Otherwise, mortar will work fine, too!

    Finally, double check what the manufacturer of the tub requires...some require that you use NO bedding substrate at all!
