    Black sediment in cold water pipes rust in hot water pipes
    I have black sediment stuck in fixtures for all cold water pipes and rust out of the hot. Could this have to do with not changing a water filter on the main? The black sediment looks like carbon particles and I am afraid that it has effected my water heater also.

    A few questions. How old is your house and what material are the pipes? Are you on a pump or city water?
    How often do you flush your water heater? Let me know. Tom

    Thanks for your response. We reviewed all the cold and hot water. Water pipes are copper. Drain are black pipe. House is 1968 construction. City water. We have not flushed water heater. We think a water filter (on the main line) may have failed and that the black sediment is carbon particles. Not sure. That also was not replaced for an eternity. We are flushing the water heater and in doing that the rust out of the hot water sources runs clear. The fixtures are all clogged and we bought replacements. The filter has rust coloring all over it which I find frightening. So trying to figure out if the rust could be from heater (would it back flow)? Or, if problem is from outside.
