They are there for food and shelter. To make them leave, deny them food and seal all entrance points. Or you could trap and poison them.

There is an old movie called "All The Little Animals." It may give you some ideas.

Yes. You can also 'hunt' them whenever you have time, especially where you think they are most likely to hide, for example in places where it is almost always dark like in cupboards.

Try to remove or secure any food source for the rats. Traps are effective but must be placed carefully and tended to often. If you use bait (poison) get it in block form and check label for low secondary poisoning (so if something else eats the dying rat, it won't be poisoned). If unsure or the label doesn't say, call the company's number on the label and ask about this. They are usually quite frank and open about such questions. Let me know if you would like more details on setting traps.

For roaches, residual crack & crevice insecticide. Treat under cupboards (usually a space between btm cupboard and floor), c&c along sides of cpbd, baseboards, under large appliances... You also have to cover all levels. If there is a large roach infestation, an exterminator might be a good idea, esp if you are not familiar with using and applying pesticides.

Besides denying them food, keep the home as clean as possible. Keep all garbage cans covered. Do not leave dirty dishes or standing water in the sink. Spread boric acid for the roaches. Use peanut butter on mouse traps.

I am sorry you said rats, not mice. Use Decon for rats and seal all entry areas.

If you in fact have a house and not an apartment, a couple hundred bucks and a professional will rid you roaches. Rats are something I don't know about. Pellet gun perhaps?
