    Turning 40/confused about my future.
I can't seem to keep a job for more than a few (4) months. Never have been able to. With one or 2 exceptions. I don't know if I am retarded or bipolar, mean, or just crazy. I feel like I know what I want to be, but I can't seem to get there. Something, usually my tolerance for mean coworkers, gets in the way. What's wrong with me? I have seen my doctor, he put me on anti-depressants. Has helped, some, I guess. I don't cry so much anymore, but still can't see things through. Help??

Have you gone to see a therapist or counselling? You need to list out all your concerns and address them one by one. It's not something we/you can fix overnight.

Your issue is complex, because it sounds as if you have limited resilience and coping skills. Even more complex is the fact that you're 40 and this has become a pattern for you.

The fact that you're asking about what to do, and questioning your part in it is good. It means there is the desire for change.

I agree totally with I Wish - find a good therapist, someone that you can relate to, and start to unpack your feelings, reactions and motivations. Stick to it.

It is never too late to understand yourself and to make changes, although I suspect it will be difficult. It is certainly never too late to be happy.

I wish you all the best.

I hate the 9 to 5 rut. I try to make money by coming up with my own ideas of making money. Try thinking of some self employ type work you can do.
It doesn't always pay good but it may be enough that you could just look for a part time job to make up the difference.

Try taking some career tests and see where your preferences lie. If you're not satisfied with you're doing, change it. Just because you're 40 doesn't mean life is over - you have finally determined who you are and can now build on your strengths instead of bashing away at things that need to be improved. Be honest with yourself and decide what you truly like to do, things you're good at it, and then get the education you need to be able to do the job you want to do.
