I've done it long before the existence of Windows. You just exploit non-thought out security behaviors of the operating system. Although not technically hacking, a grad student write a networking terminal handler and asked me to try it out. With in 5 minutes, I crashed it. I was able to make the character position go negative by typing 3 characters. That was a special case.
I could write my own programs that ran priveledged, by copying them into a the directory space of another priveledged program. I could run it and then put the old one back all because the protection was incorrect. I ended up working for these guys.
Safecracking and combination locks are fun to crack too. I learned that skill in high school on my own too for simple right-left-right or left-right-left locks. It takes me about 20 minutes.
Kind of fun when your in high school and have no $ and lots of time on your hands.
