Why do people ''think'' they are tolerant, when they're not?
Why does people say that they are tolerant and not rasist of other's religion's when they aren't? I recently opened a topic on ''Why do people assume that wicca's evil'' or something to that extent. Many of the people who replied were christians. I know that there are other's who share the same main vews. I have a huge problem with people who aren't tolerant of other's. I am getting so sick of hearing ''if you don't follow Jesus your going to hell'' or etc. The only reason christians say that is because they are taught that way. It say's in the bible, No man can get to heaven expecpt through me~jesus/god. What if in someone else's bible it say's that same thing, but with budda or Bob as the god. Well then they believe differently and so my point is everyone thinks they're faith is the master one. Which is to me, complete BS. When you get that mindset, people start to get rasist and then lose tolerance for other's. Right away you want to try to convert them. I just want to scream at my grandmother sometimes. I don't need to be converted. I was a christian for 18 yrs. It was a waste of time and it scared me into thinking I was going to hell or not. If I believe the wicca way, then w/e. Some christian shouldn't try to convert me or look down at me like I'm crap for it. It's FACT that all God's ultimatly are the same. Just worshiped in different ways. If you don't know what fact is look it up in the dictionary. All religion's look at their's as the one truth. Someday, I hope that the world will be one huge religion or at least have common beliefs. For right now, why can't people see that we all believe in something, or that we all believe in a supreme being. I get so angry at people when they try to say that blah blah your going to hell. F u you aren't magical. NO ONE know's what happens after death and just because some book wrote by some person we don't know 2,000 yrs ago says that the god of abraham is the god of all and the true god, Doesn't mean its so. That must mean that if I say the world doesn't spin on an axis that it doesn't? I said it doesn't and ill write it down, so I'm right and in 2,000 everyone must believe me or I will destroy the world with fire... come on . How gulable are people?

    Nice respect there.

I agreed with some of what you said up to that point.

Hard to take someone who is talking about tolerance seriously with a line like that.

Yea given it's a bit... out there. I'm mainly just really upset about this whole thing. Also proving a point. So given that, I will change it to what I feel is right. Thanks.

I hate to paraphrase from South Park, but it's necessary here:

Tolerance just means that you put up with something. It doesn't mean you like it, or agree with it... that would be Acceptance.

To be so put out by what another religion thinks of you (or of anybody else) shows a lack of tolerance for their religion on your part, or an insecurity in your own beliefs. Many of us deal with people of religions other than our own on a regular basis, and most people who are religious have a faith that espouses itself as being THE right choice, as opposed to A right choice. An individual of $RANDOM_FAITH_86 who believes that something less than ideal awaits me upon my death doesn't bother me, nor should it bother you. If you have your faith (or a lack of faith), that should be enough for you... you shouldn't need validation from others.

To ask others to change their faith so as not to offend you is unreasonable... what gives you more validity in their faith than whoever authored their rules? If you think that your feelings should be more important to a Christian than the words of Jesus, then perhaps a rethinking is in order... that's edging past unreasonable into the realm of lunacy.

Just understand this too... its always the extremes that get you going and mad. There a lot of in between too.

One of the best teacher of religion I ever knew was a dominican monk. He could orate for an hour about any major religion with passion... and damn near convert the entire room... including one time he talked about athiests... he really could make you think. More people need to be as open to learning as he is.

But again, it's the extremes that get us riled and make us post sometimes.

And I do agree that tolerance and acceptance are not the same thing.

First off, I don't understand a word you siad. Well some of it. I wasn't saying that I was trying to change ppl's belief's. I wasn't saying that I'm not tolerant of other's. I was saying that I'm sick of trying to have a reasonable conversation with people who clearly can't stand other religion's. It's offensive when someone tries to tell me what I should do with my life or where ill be when I die. That's no one's right to say. No one know's what happens when you die. No one has the right to clam master religion as most do. It's not that I'm put out by what people think of me. I'm upset that they treat people differently and act like they are better then everyone else. You clearly weren't understanding what I was saying. I don't know what I belief, I'm just tried of the crap from christians. I'm sure thouasands of people deal with this the same as I do. Ppl need to stop forcing relgion on other's and they need to stop trying to be the master religions. What are they? A bunch of Hitler's of the religious world. All this has ever done is push me AWAY from christianity. From how I was rasied. If that's what its like, if I'm supposed to live as a slave to a god, then ill go to hell so to speak. They need to learn how to shut up and deal with the other's in the world. This go's for any religion, even my own someday.I'm just putting the thoughts out there, maybe one day someone will actually listen to reason.

Respect for one another is lost, not only in religion but just every day life.

Find your inner peace and kill'em with kindness is about all I can say! :)

I guess it is what you expect or want from the idea of tolerance. But as noted before, it does not mean a person believes your ideas are right, it does not mean they don't believe you are doomed to hell for beliving in what you do. It does not mean they have to accept any of those teachings as valid.

It means that they accept the fact that the other idea exists and believes that person has the right to believe that if they want to. And they do nothing take away any legal right of that person for that belief.

Too many people expect or what so much more, whichis just not going to happen when someone is firm in their beliefs from either side
