    Patient Rights - The Right to Know
    I found out 10 days after an ER visit, that a nurse made an error and gave me a 2nd dose of 3 IV meds 25 minutes after a different nurse gave them. No one ever told me or the family member that came to pick me up. I "stumbled" upon the information by reading my medical records because I was still feeling sick and back at a specialists office. This was obviously a violation of my rights - what recourse do I have? One of the meds was a strong narcotic. My family member should have been alerted to this situation so they could adequately stay with me and know what to watch for. :(

    I don't know that it was a violation of your rights at all. IF the mistake made you sick, then you should see a lawyer. In fact, you should see a lawyer anyway. If you have a case, he'll tell you.

    excon is right, there is no "rights" violation here. There is a treatment violation though. And if the mistake had a lasting effect on your health you might be entitled to compensation for the error.

    So contact an attorney.

    Kudos to both of the answers above. Your "rights" were not violated, but a dangerous medication error did occur.

    Seek the advice of a medical malpractice attorney. Not sure if you will win your case as there was no permanent damage done, but you may get something for the temporary inconvenience, maybe pain and suffering.

    But it is best to seek the advice of a legal professional.
