I have a judgment in Virginia that is 12 years old... how do I get rid of it?
Back in 1998, I was involved in a car accident. I did not have car insurance when we rear-ended a bmw on the freeway. The owner sued me, and a judgement in virginia has been on my record since then. Now I live in Washington, D.C. and I am unable to obtain a new driver's license because this issue is still pending according to the Virginia Dmv.. The told me to contact the lawyer assigned to this judgment and make payment arrangements...
Am I still liable for this judgment even though it is 12 years old? I know for sure that I cannot pay it. I am not even working. I need a driver's license to help me in finding a job. Please help.

    Two different issues.
    1. DMV
    2. civil judgements

    1. the DMV does not really look at the judgement, merely your failure to pay for the damage you caused that was deemed your fault. That never goes away, you have to either have a court approved payment plan or paid in full to ever get a drivers license. And if you set a plan up and fail to follow it, they may cancel the license.

Then you have a judgement, that can also be renewed, so it may or may not still be active, if it is, the person you owe money to, may also get a garnishment against you.

Judgements may be for 7 to 10 years but can easily be renewed
