    Deaceased persons account
My brother has passed away and I am in possession of the debit card for his bank account which I need access to in order to pay his debts. Can I just withdraw cash from this account to pay his debts, keeping the receipts instead of closing the account?

If you are not a co-owner of the account, that is, you and your brother as joint tenants with rights of survivorship, it is against the law for you to take money from that account.

Briefly, most banks will allow you money to pay funeral expenses if you bring in a bill. They will give you a check made out to the funeral home.

To get the money, there is an easy legal way if there is not much money in the account.
