Daughter 14 caught shoplifting civil demand
My daughter who is 14 years old was recently caught shoplifting at Macys in New York State. Being a minor and first time offender they let my daughter go saying she is banned from the store for three years. I thought the punishment was fair till a few days later we (my wife and I) received a bill for $500.00 for civil damages. I was shocked that my wife and I were being punished for my child's bad decision. We taught her better than that and believe me, she is being disciplined for her poor choice. I think this so called bill is ridiculous though and was wondering what action can be taken against my wife and I if we do not pay. I am just making ends meet as it is and can't afford to pay $500.00 and do not think it fair to be charged this. Don Z

What exactly does the bill say and did you sign anything at the time of her release? Do you have copies of anything you have signed ?

No nothing was signed and my daughter was released to us with a verbal warning for her not to return to the store for three years.
The bill says it is a civil penalty.
