    Self closing hinges
I need to install a dog door, and there are self closing hinges on this door. How do I go about taking them off and re-installing them? Thank you

There are several types of self-closing hinges. I'm not sure what type you have.

Basically, you need to release the tension on the spring that closes the door. On my basement door, I have a cover over the spring. It lifts straight-up. There's a pin that has to be removed. I have a small tool that can be used to take the spring tension off the spring. Then, I can just let it free. You can use a pair of pliers.

To reinstall the spring, it's a matter of using the small tool to tighten the spring. With each stroke, you put the pin back in to hold a plate to which the spring is attached. You continue for a revolution or two.

Check and see if there's a cover that pulls off. If so, pull it off and look at it. Try to figure out how it comes apart.

I have a good size lock on it,...
