I once grew lovely potatoes, there is nothing like going out and getting that pitchfork underneath the plant and lifting slightly to bring those lovely little new potatoes up to the light.; what a wonderful addition they are to supper.

I had to look this up because all we ever used was manure the first year.Rake in a general fertilizer 2 weeks before planting potatoes. Do not add lime - growing potatoes like a soil pH of just under 6... slightly acidic.

In my years, including the gardens my Granmothers and Mother planted and my own, no one ever added lime to the soil to grow potatoes. Never had any problems with growing them either, except for potato bugs some years. Just as Tickle stated, adding manure the first year works very well. Then after, check your soil and add fertilizer as needed. We would rotate crops in the garden so no vegetable would be in the same place twice.

    Good luck!

We pretty much did the same as tickle with the exception of the fertilizer. We just dug a hole beside the new planted potato and put fertilizer beside them on the same day that we planted them. Also we put water in the hole with potato. Later in the spring when the weeds started growing around the plants we would hoe the weeds rake up fresh dirt around the plant and add some more fertilizer around the plant... not to close or it will burn them up. We planted rows and rows of potaotes enough to do from one crop season to the next. We had a lot of land and each year we would rotate where the garden was.

Anyone ever grow potatoes in tires stacked 4 or 5 high. I read somewhere some time ago that you can start potatoes in the first tire, and as they grow, pile soil up over the tops and they will just keep going until you have a sky high tube of tires totally teaming with tubers. I...
