    See Socket 478 (mPGA478B).

In addition to the processor physically fitting, the motherboard has to have the microcode to support the processor. If you stick a more recent processor on an early motherboard, you may need a BIOS upgrade for the board to recognize the processor properly.

There is also heatsink consideration, some boards have components located in such a manner that they could prevent installation of larger heatsinks typically on faster processors.

Lastly, there is available power margin to consider. If your system had a slow processor and a matched power supply, and you've now upgraded to a faster processor and added other components, your power supply could be insufficient for the new power draw.
