Guy has 3 cats: weird or not?
So... there's this guy.
He has 3 cats.
I find it a little weird. Is it just me?
Guys are supposed to have dogs, sometimes reptiles, but three cats?
Whoa.
Is it my problem or does this guy have a problem?
And yes, he talks about his 3 cats a lot. He gets really defensive if I giggle or make stunned faces when he starts talking about them like people and tells me how much he misses them.
Ha. I just want your opinion.
Am I being a jerk? Or is 3 cats 1 guy just... weird?

I don't think its weird..
Men are strange creatures,I don't understand them, but cats, cats are not strange.
And a man with cats, one balances out the other!

Cats are low maintenance pets and many busy people find them great companions who don't need a lot of attention.
Maybe he grew up with cats so he finds comfort from that.
I don't think I would count out a nice guy because he has cats.
If he dressed them up in silly outfits, then I might think twice. :)

You have a point artykins :)
... I think it's just me, maybe?
If it was one cat I wouldn't mind, but three? For some reason it raises a little flag.
Maybe it's just my preconceived notions of men and how they should be...
Hmm.

There's nothing strange about it at all! I know quite a lot of men that prefer cats, even my own husband!
I'm not sure if it's a generation thing because I will admit that I have not meant an older man (50+) that saw cats as anything more then mousers or pests. Usually they also think that a good dog belongs in the yard and not in the house.
Maybe its because we are in a more pet friendly era where everything doesn't need to have a purpose to own.

I'm married to a cat lover. We have three and may be rescuing and adopting two feral kittens that we have been feeding. My two son have cats (and abhor dogs). Each has its own personality and idiosyncrasies. Each completes the household without being demanding (except when it's time to eat). All offer affection without smothering. And being constantly "in your face." None have to be taken for walks, and all were potty trained by their mothers long before we rescued them from the mean streets. All are fastidious to a fault. Cats can be (and my younger son's has been) left alone for as much as two days with proper preparation and managed just fine.
What's not to like about cats?

Perhaps it is a generation thing? Most of my friends, including guys, tell me it is weird and kind of creepy.

I have a cat. I don't mind them.
I know they are easy to handle, it's part of the reason I got one.
If it were one, heck I wouldn't be asking--- but three. Really, that is just one too many for me.
... agh

Hello Sarah:
There isn't a manlier man than me, and I have a cat. I know, I SHOULD like Budweiser, but I prefer a good cabernet sauvignon. I SHOULD drive a pick up, but I have a Volvo. I SHOULD smoke Marlboro's, but I smoke other leafy green substances.
So, you're not being a jerk, really. You just need to expand your horizons..

I guess it may also have to do with how the guys are raised.
If the guy is raised in a slightly more macho environment then they may be taught from an early age that dogs are manly pets and sissy cats are for girls.
You would need to take a look on how the older generation of men in those guys lives view cats, once again going back to the older generation thing. If their daddy and other influential older men viewed cats as pests or girly pets then it is very likely that that is how they will learn to view them.

Yup, that's probably true. It works the other way too. My husband's parents hated cats, so, when their kids were small, got a dog ("Savage") who rolled around in disgusting things outside, who peed when excited, who had to be taken for walks, who, when indoors, was like a bull in a china shop, who slobbered on whoever was petting him. No wonder my husband loves cats.

Another point to consider is this Sarah, the guy must have a good sense of his masculinity if he feels cool about being a cat person. He is confident enough to step out of the stereotype and do his own thing.
He is embracing his feminine side and there is nothing wrong with that... :)

Hello artsy:
Bingo.
Men who inherently have NO masculinity, try to make up for it by the truck they drive, the PIT BULL they own, or the beer they drink.

Sooooo...
I tried to broaden my horizons... and this is how it went.
I tried saying sorry. It went like this:
Ring Ring Ring
Guy: Hello?
Me: Hi, it's me. I just wanted to say sorry for being such a jerk.
Guy: Oh yea... about what?
Me:... your cats..
Guy: Meh it's all right, I love my cats.
A scoff and a giggle comes out
Me: sorry. I'm just not used to it.
Guy: You know you are a jerk. I'll call you some other time.
Me: Whatever- go have sex with your cats freak show.
-click-
... yeah.. I don't see a relationship in the near future.
Sigh.
Sarah
Obviously. I am a jerk.
Sigh

Hi, mudweiser!
Other than with the cats, is there another person living with the guy? Also, if he has a yard, how large is it, please?
Thanks!

Define weird.
The way I see it, we're all a little weird - but most of us keep it inside. (Weird is in the eye of the beholder also.) However, with some of us the 'weird' is a little more obvious.. it's on the outside.
A guy with three cats doesn't raise an eyebrow for me - my husband had 2 canaries when I met him. Is that weird? I didn't think it was, but someone might.
Perhaps it's about not making judgements... it's all part of the rich tapesty of life!
