Usually an expiration date has more to do with appearance and flavor than spoilage. That's why you are seeing expiration dates on many products that didn't use to have them. If it looks OK, smells OK, and tastes OK, it is probably not harmful. The nutritional value will most likely be diminished long before it becomes harmful. A few weeks past the expiration date I would use it. A few months, I would throw it out.

The best advice: "If in doubt, throw it out."
