Mistake in Previous post... PLEAE HELP
I made a mistake in my previous post.

Sorry. I told you that the video was burned to a dvd, it was not. It was burned to a regular cd. Is there still any way of extracting just the music file?

    Thanks again,

    Paul

    Hello,

okay, let me understand what you are asking first... I think you are saying that this is a video disc (whether it be a DVD or VCD) with Pink Floyd in concert made to watch on a television and you would like to get the audio off it so you can listen to the music on a CD player such as in the car.

^^^Is that correct? If so, then let me know and we'll work from there. Thanks.

A couple of points here. First, please do not ask or expect us to reply via private e-mail. Questions posted here will be answered here. You can set it up so that the site e-mails you when an answer is posted.

Second, I'm curious as to where you got this CD. Is it a commercial CD or did someone burn it for you?

    Response to e-mail:

    Scott:

I received your response and I searched through the websites FAQ's and
Rules and I do not see anywhere something stating that I can not ask a
Member to reply or e-mail me privately. If I did e-mail a member
Privately I definitely would not EXPECT anything from that member if they
Chose not to respond to me. If I have missed this rule please let me know
    Where it is.

    Thanks,

    --------------------------------------------------------------------
I didn't say it was a rule or part of the FAQs. But I have been doing this (helping out on Q&A boards) for over 20 years. In all that time one of the consistent principles of those forums was that they were PUBLIC forums for the benefit of the users. Users benefit by keeping correspondence public for several reasons:
    1) other users may benefit by being able to review problems and solutions that others have encountered
    2) it avoids duplication as we can see what others have already answered
    3) it insures accurate answers by allowing others to correct mistakes.

    There are other factors involved;
    1) The site was setup with message boards to organize the questions and answers into public threads. So its clear that the intention was to keep things public.
    2) It is easier for use to hit the reply or quote buttons and then type in our reply. To send you e-mail requires extra effor on our part. We are volunteering our time and knowledge to help you. I, personally, think it effrontery to request that we reply via e-mail for your convenience.
    3) By asking us to reply via e-mail you are also asking us to reveal our e-mail address to you. I don't know about others, but I'm very careful who I give my e-mail address to.

This issue has been discussed before on this board and others. Whenever its been discussed the volunteers have overwhelmingly agreed that questions and answers should be kept public.

So if you expect to get help here, I suggest you stop making requests for direct e-mail responses.

    Response
Here is the e-mail that you sent me, nickieyes:

    This is the message:

    Wzartv:

Thank you for responding to my post. You are correct in understanding that a
Pink Floyd concert was burned to a regular cd. The cd is an Audiobahn compact
disk 48x multi-speed 700MB cd. It is not a dvd, vcd or any other type of
compact disk. When I put the disk in my cd drive on my computer and go to that
rive through windows explorer I see a file called "pink floyd live at live8 03-
07-05.avi". If I double click on it, it opens in Windows Media player and the
video plays. The file is only 100MB and the concert is approx 26 minutes
    long.

I was wondering if there are any free programs out there or any way that I can
get the music off the cd and then burn the music file to a cd so I can play
it in my car or home stereo system. I could get a tape recorder and place it in
front of my computer speakers and try to try to tape it that way but I don't
think the quality will be that great.

If you have any ideas I would very much appreciate youth time and effort.

    Thanks again,

    Paul
In response to this, I believe I do have a solution.

Go to http://www.nch.com.au/wavepad/ and download the FREE program called "WavePad"

When downloaded, install it on your computer by opening the downloaded install file. Open up WavePad, click New at the top and it may ask you a few recording questions. Now press record in the program and make sure you have your record input set to "Stereo Mix" (on some sound cards its called "What U Hear" or some other variations).

Now, play the Windows Media file on the CD. You will see that WavePad is recording the music. IMPORTANT NOTE: You will probably need to mess around with audio levels, etc. until you get it exactly right. It will probably take you a few tries.

Once you are finished recording, press stop and save the file. You have the option to save it in many file types. If you are planning on burning to a CD, the files should be saved as WAV files.

Now use your favorite CD burning program to burn the music.

    ---
Now for your tape recorder idea, yes it would work, but like you said, the audio quality would most likely be poor.

If you have any problems or need further explanation of any the above instructions, please feel free to ask here in the forum by replying to this post.

    Good Luck!

You are correct in understanding that a
Pink Floyd concert was burned to a regular cd.
I have to question the legality here. I know that some bands do allow patrons to record concerts while others do not. Unless Pink Floyd does allow this practice, what you have may be a violation of their copyright rights.

Hmm very true, I didn't think of that - be sure to consider what you are doing is legal...
