    Celie was played by Whoopie Goldberg, who has had a long career.

    You are right about that,But the one who played her sister.She went to Africa with the missionaries and took care of the children.

    Here is the best website for movie answers/trivia... :) It also says that Celie was played by Whoppi. Her sister, Nettie, was played by Akosua Busia .
